Glossary of Terms

Child: Nine years old, and younger.


Discharge: Mucus (or mucous) a flow of fluid from the body.


Endometrium: The mucous membrane that lines the womb and increases in thickness in the later part of the menstrual cycle. 


Female: 1. Female organism, biology a female person or animal. 2. Of women, relating or belonging to women or girls. 3. Of the sex that produces offspring, biology relating or belonging to the sex that produces sex cells gametes that fuse with male sex cells during sexual reproduction.


Feminine Hygiene: Personal care items for women. Such as cloth or disposable sanitary napkins, tampons, cups and sponges.


Menarche: The first time that a girl or young woman menstruates. Around the world the average age for menarche is anywhere from 10-13 years of age.

Menopause: End of menstruation, the time in a woman’s life when menstruation diminishes and ceases, usually between the ages of 45 and 50.

Menorrhagia: Heavy, prolonged menstrual bleeding.


Menses: 1. Menstruation, or the period of time that it lasts. 2. Menstrual discharge, the blood and other matter discharged from the womb during menstruation.


Menstrual Cycle: The time between the first day of one period and the first day of the next period.


Mittelschmerz: Cramping or pain near the ovary site at the time of ovulation.

Mucus (or Mucous): The substance that changes consistency as ovulation approaches and after ovulation occurs. Mucus is crucial for fertilization because it helps sperm reach the uterus when a woman is fertile.


Ovulation: Ripen and release egg, to ripen and release an egg or eggs from the ovary for possible fertilization.


Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): has a wide variety of symptoms, including mood swings, tender breasts, food cravings, fatigue, irritability and depression. An estimated 3 of every 4 menstruating women experience some form of premenstrual syndrome. These problems tend to peak in your late 20s and early 30s.

Period: 1. An interval or portion of time. 2. Menstruation time, an occurrence of menstruation.


Pre-teen: Years 10 through 12.


Teen: Years 13 through 19.


Vaginal Discharge: Discharge of secretions from the cervical glands of the vagina; normally clear or white.
